THE MYANMAR PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET AT A GLANCE

Myanmar is a country rich in natural resources such as gas, gems, and possibly oil. Natural gas exports to neighboring countries are already providing a significant revenue stream.5

The population of Myanmar in 2009 was estimated at 58 million inhabitants. The Population growth (annual %) in Myanmar was reported at 0.78 in 2009.
About 70 % of the population lives in rural areas.1

The Per Capita Total Health Expenditures at current prices for the year 1998 was estimated at 613 kyat (US$0.70) and for the year 2007 was estimated at 7,890 kyat (US$9.11) per capita. The Government Health Expenditures at current prices was estimated at 65 kyat (US$ 0.075) in 1998 and 928 kyat (US$ 1.075) in 2007. Per Capita Gross Domestic Product at current prices for the year 1998 was 33,426 kyat (US$ 38.62 and as of 2007 was 394,496 kyat (US$ 455.90). The total Health Expenditures as percentage of the Gross Domestic Product was ranging around 2 % during the period of 1998 to 2007.1

The import value of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment continues to rise due to the ever increasing demand in the Myanmar market. According to statistics of the Ministry of Commerce, Myanmar the annual import of pharmaceuticals reached a value of $147.7 million in business year 2010 this is an increase of 17.4 percent from 20092. Pharmaceuticals are meanwhile Myanmar’s seventh largest import item based on dollar value3. The two major cities, Yagon and Mandalay, contribute 60 % of total pharmaceutical sales.1

By the end of 2009 the total number of government hospitals was 884. This represents an increase of 40% since 1988. The total number of provided hospital beds in public hospitals under the supervision of the Ministry of Health was 38,579. Since 2010 Private Hospital and Private Health Care Services have been legally allowed to be registered.4
